Palccoyo Rainbow Mountain

Rainbow-striped ridges in the high Andes, reached by an easy, scenic walk.

  • Duration: 10 - 12 hours (full day)
  • Format: shared, private

Palccoyo offers three ridges striped in red, ochre, green and violet, plus a nearby forest of rock spires, reached by a gentle walk of about 30 to 45 minutes on flat to gently sloping ground. The drive there winds through high Andean villages and past grazing llamas and alpacas, and is part of the reward. The altitude, close to 16,000 feet at the main viewpoint and up to about 16,400 feet at the highest lookout, is part of the experience; it fits best toward the end of your stay, once you have acclimatized, and mornings can bring a dusting of snow that makes the colored ridges look even more dramatic.

Why we chose it

  • Same rainbow-mountain photograph as Vinicunca, without the grueling pre-dawn climb or the crowds.
  • The main viewpoint sits lower than Vinicunca's summit, which makes it a gentler first taste of high altitude.
  • The nearly flat walk works for travelers of any fitness level, including families and older guests.
  • Fewer visitors mean time to actually take in the view instead of waiting in line for a photo spot.

Practical information

Good to know
Palccoyo (Rainbow Mountain) reaches about 16,500 feet at its highest viewpoint, noticeably higher than Cusco -- this is one of the highest, most physically demanding day trips in the region. Altitude sickness (soroche) is common at this elevation, especially for travelers flying in directly from sea level (e.g. Lima) and starting a tour the same or next day -- that combination is the most frequent cause of serious symptoms we see. Spend at least 1-2 days acclimatizing beforehand, walk slowly, stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and try coca tea. This matters especially for older travelers and anyone with heart, lung or blood pressure conditions, who should consult a doctor before the trip and tell their guide immediately if they feel unwell.

Frequently asked questions

How much walking is involved?

About 30 to 45 minutes each way on flat to gently sloping terrain, roughly 1.2 miles round trip to the main viewpoint.

What time does the tour leave?

Very early, typically between 4:30 and 5:00 AM from Cusco, to reach the mountain and its light before clouds move in.

How high is Palccoyo?

The main viewpoint sits around 16,000-16,100 feet, with the highest nearby lookout near 16,400 feet, noticeably lower than Vinicunca's 16,700+ feet.

Is there an entrance fee?

Yes, a small community entrance fee (roughly $3-6 USD) is charged at the site; it is normally included in the tour price.

Will I still see the colors if it snows?

Yes. Morning snow sometimes dusts the ridges, especially in the dry season, and the stripes still show through, just with a different, more dramatic look than on a clear day.
