PeruRail Vistadome

Windows to the sky: the panoramic train that turns the ride to Machu Picchu into a scenic experience.

  • Duration: ~1 h 30 min from Ollantaytambo; ~3 h 30 min from Poroy
  • Route: Cusco (Poroy / Wanchaq) or Ollantaytambo - Machu Picchu Pueblo
  • Class: panoramic

Imagine the Sacred Valley unfolding above and beside you: snow-capped peaks, terraced slopes and the Urubamba River narrowing into a gorge, all framed by panoramic windows on the sides and on the roof. The PeruRail Vistadome is the train that makes the journey to Machu Picchu part of the adventure, with views that start as soon as you board and do not stop until the cloud forest closes in around Aguas Calientes. On board, the experience is designed to be enjoyed: snacks made with local ingredients, an interpretive audiotour that points out key places along the route, Andean music and cultural performances on the return journey and, on the way back from Machu Picchu, an alpaca clothing show that moves through the cars. On daytime bimodal services, weather permitting, there is also a scenic stop at Huaypo Lagoon. The Vistadome departs from five stations (Wánchaq, San Pedro and Poroy in Cusco, Ollantaytambo and Urubamba), so it adapts to wherever your trip is based. From Ollantaytambo the ride takes about an hour and a half to two hours; from Cusco it is a bimodal service of roughly four hours in total. Many departures through the day mean we can fit your timing around the rest of your itinerary. We recommend it for first-time visitors, families and photographers, for anyone who wants the train itself to be part of the memory. We wish you a window seat as the gorge narrows toward Machu Picchu, and we are here to arrange your seats, your entrance and the rest of your day.

Why we chose it

  • The most flexible schedule of any train to Machu Picchu, with the highest number of daily departures, which matters when we're building a tight day-itinerary around it
  • The wraparound windows and skylights make the ride itself a scenic activity, not just transportation, which is what first-time visitors tell us they want
  • The onboard Andean dance show gives the return leg a distinct, memorable moment instead of just repeating the outbound scenery
  • Well-understood, reliable operator (PeruRail) with an established bimodal bus+train contingency during the Jan-Apr rainy season, so trips are less likely to be disrupted

Practical information

Schedule
PeruRail Vistadome departs Ollantaytambo multiple times daily, with common slots around 7:05am, 8:00am, 8:29am, 1:27pm, and 3:37pm; an evening return around 6:00-9:00pm is also typical. During the Jan-Apr rainy season, PeruRail sometimes runs a bimodal bus+train service (bus from Cusco to Ollantaytambo or Pachar, then train onward), so travelers starting in Cusco should expect an added ~1h45m bus segment. Exact times change seasonally -- always verify at booking.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the PeruRail Vistadome cost?

One-way fares typically run in the rough range of $95-130 depending on season, route leg, and how far in advance you book; PeruRail adjusts pricing dynamically and by specific route segment (Cusco/Poroy, Ollantaytambo, or Urubamba to Machu Picchu). We always confirm the exact current fare for your travel dates before booking.

How much does the Vistadome Observatory cost compared to the standard Vistadome?

The Observatory version costs more than the standard Vistadome, generally in the neighborhood of $120-150 one-way, reflecting the added open-air balcony car and slightly upgraded service.

Why do some trains use a bus between Cusco and the station?

From January through April, seasonal rains can affect the Cusco-to-Sacred-Valley rail corridor, so PeruRail runs a bimodal service: a bus takes passengers from Cusco (or a transfer point in the Sacred Valley) to board the train further down the line, then the train continues to Machu Picchu Pueblo. This is normal seasonal operation, not a service failure.

How is the Vistadome different from Inca Rail's 360 train?

Both are mid-range, panoramic-window trains with onboard snacks and drinks, but PeruRail's Vistadome runs far more daily departures (over 20, versus roughly a dozen for the 360) and adds a live Andean dance performance; Inca Rail's 360 includes an open-air observation car as standard, which on the Vistadome side is only available by upgrading to the Observatory service.

Which station does the Vistadome depart from?

Depending on the specific service and season, it can depart from Cusco (Poroy or Wanchaq via the bimodal bus), Ollantaytambo, or Urubamba, all arriving at Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes). We confirm the exact departure point for each guest's itinerary.

What is included on board the Vistadome?

Snacks made with local ingredients, an interpretive audiotour, and Andean music and cultural performances on the return journey, plus an alpaca clothing show from the Machu Picchu direction. Daytime bimodal services may add a scenic stop at Huaypo Lagoon, weather permitting.

How long is the ride?

About 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu. From Cusco it is a bimodal service (bus plus train) of roughly 4 hours in total.
