Pachacamac Archaeological Sanctuary
An entire pre-Inca pilgrimage city, thirty minutes from Miraflores.
- Duration: ~4 hours (half day)
- Format: shared, private
A half-day trip to Pachacamac, one of the most important pre-Columbian pilgrimage and oracle sites on the Peruvian coast -- adobe pyramids and temples built by several cultures (Lima, Wari, Ychsma, and finally the Inca) over more than a thousand years of continuous use, culminating at the Temple of the Sun, whose upper terraces open onto a Pacific Ocean view. Hotel pickup included, about an hour's drive from Miraflores depending on traffic.
Why we chose it
- A continuously-used pilgrimage site for over a thousand years and multiple cultures, ending with the Inca -- a different kind of history than colonial Lima.
- The Temple of the Sun's ocean view is a genuine payoff for the trip out, not just ruins in the desert.
- Far enough from the standard city circuit that it doesn't feel like everyone else's itinerary.
Highlights
- Temple of the Sun, with a Pacific Ocean view from its upper terraces
- Adobe pyramids and temples spanning more than a thousand years and several cultures
- Well outside the usual city-center circuit -- a genuine change of scenery
- Half-day, with hotel pickup included
Ideal for
- guests wanting archaeology beyond the city center
- a change of pace from the coast
Practical information
- Duration
- ~4 hours (half day), including hotel pickup and drive time (about 1 hour each way, more with traffic)
- What to bring
- Sun protection (hat, sunscreen), water, and comfortable walking shoes -- the site is open desert with little shade
- Good to know
- Best in the morning before the sun is highest; the site can be windy and dusty
- Difficulty
- Moderate -- open desert terrain, sand and loose stone underfoot, with some inclines to reach the Temple of the Sun's upper terraces. No shade.
- Accessibility
- Limited -- the site is largely unpaved archaeological ground; the main museum/visitor center is accessible, but the temple circuit itself is not wheelchair-friendly. Confirm with the operator if mobility is a concern.
