Paracas

Where the golden desert meets the Pacific: a bay, a nature reserve full of life and authentic local experiences.

Three and a half hours south of Lima, Paracas is a bay where the golden desert meets the Pacific. Its National Reserve protects cliffs, hidden beaches and the striking Playa Roja, and a short boat ride from the El Chaco pier reaches the Ballestas Islands, a protected marine reserve alive with seabirds and marine life. Around the bay, authentic local experiences await: the fishing cove of Lagunillas, fresh seafood by the water and the legacy of the Paracas culture. It is usually paired with Ica and the Huacachina desert oasis a short drive inland, a natural coastal-desert addition to a Lima stay.

Highlights

  • Islas Ballestas boat tour -- a protected marine reserve with seabirds and rich marine life
  • Paracas National Reserve -- golden desert, cliffs, hidden beaches and the Pacific coastline
  • The Paracas Candelabra, a giant unexplained geoglyph seen from the boat on the way to the islands
  • Pairs naturally with Ica and the Huacachina oasis, a short drive inland

Best time to visit

June through September (dry season) brings calmer seas and the smoothest Ballestas Islands boat rides; December through March is warmer and sunnier but with more afternoon wind. Mornings are best year-round for the boat tour, before the wind picks up.

Getting there

About 3.5 hours by road from Lima (roughly 155 miles south), by private transfer, tourist bus, or as part of a Lima-Ica-Paracas circuit. No commercial airport; all access is overland.
